Butterflies and bees adore this pretty perennial, with its pincushion flowers of ruby, pink and white. Carried on sturdy stems, the flowers rise above a mass of handsome, arrow-shaped leaves and are ideal for cutting. Flowers July to October. Planting Exposure to winter cold is essential for germination, so plant in situ September November for germination the following spring. Sow seeds 6mm deep in drills 30cms apart, in soil that has been raked to a fine tilth. Keep generously watered and thin out to 50cms spacing. Alternatively sow under glass February May, into moist seed compost, 2mm deep. May need exposure to a temperature of -4C for around 4 weeks to trigger germination. When big enough, transplant seedlings into pots and acclimatise before planting out into final positions. Prefers alkaline soils. Aftercare cut spent stems to the ground, leaving younger ones to continue flowering. Eventual height & spread 100 45cms.
