Its distinctive shape has earned this variety its nickname: the Onion Squash. Admirably fast-growing, it can be harvested in late summer. The fruits weigh up to 1.5kgs and are superb for roasting, with an excellent flavour that also works well in soups and risottos. Harvest September October. Planting sow under glass in individual pots of good seed compost, April May. Sow the seed on their sides, 1215mm deep. Maintain a minimum temperature of 10C for germination. When all danger of frost has passed, pot on and harden off before planting out at 120cms spacing. Alternatively, sow in situ May June, 4 weeks after the last frosts, and protect young seedlings with cloches on cold nights. Aftercare protect from slugs and snails. Apply a high potassium fertiliser periodically through the season. Leave a 5cms stalk when cutting and cure in the sun for 5 days before use. Eventual height & spread 75 90cms.
